  • Alithea Biotechnology GmbH - 12/02/2026 A red cell envelops a blue cell and attacks it.

    Intelligent immunotherapy – safety ensured

Immunological cell fingerprints are Alithea Bio’s core expertise. The Freiburg-based company combines advanced molecular biology with cutting-edge IT and operates one of the world’s largest immunopeptidomics databases. Alithea Bio leverages this integrated platform to offer both contract research services and software-as-a-service solutions to develop safer and more precise personalised immunotherapies more quickly.

Innovative tubular prosthesis enables reversible treatment for type 2 diabetes

Severe obesity is considered a major cause of type 2 diabetes. Building on gastric bypass surgery, the Mannheim-based company Trans-Duodenal Concepts has developed an endoscopically implantable tubular prosthesis that lines the duodenum. This both reduces food intake and can restore normal blood sugar metabolism.

  • Using nanostructures to fight bacteria - 09/10/2025 Four images showing that bacteria adhere much less readily to the nanoshape surface: in the top row, two blue-stained microscopic images – on the left, an untreated surface with a large number of colonies; on the right, nanoshape with far fewer colonies. Below are two images showing a schematic representation of the principle: bacteria on a smooth surface and on an implant with serrations.

Inspired by insect wings: antibacterial surfaces for implants

What do dragonfly wings and dental implants have in common? Nothing yet but that could soon change. The Karlsruhe-based start-up nanoshape has developed a process for coating medical implants with nanostructures similar to those found on insect wings. The coating makes surfaces bacteria-repellent and is aimed at reducing the risk of post-surgical inflammation. The first product could be on the market as early as next year.

Mobile blood-analysis system for at home medication monitoring

For many medications, regular monitoring of drug concentrations in the blood is necessary to ensure efficacy and safety. Until now, this process has been time-consuming and required laboratory personnel and resources. The Heidelberg based start up QuantiLight has developed a mobile device with innovative sensor technology that enables quick, easy measurements at home or in a doctor's surgery.

Focus on innovative drug development - accurate, time- and cost-saving

Drug research is a complex and costly process that requires extensive laboratory analyses and vast quantities of consumables, with disposable sample carriers in particular being used in their millions. PHABIOC GmbH has come up with a solution in the form of the SpecPlate, a ground-breaking alternative to sample carriers that reduces the time taken to perform analyses as well as the quantity of materials consumed. Serial production is underway.

Powerful AI systems using synthetic training data

AI systems for image analysis are only as good as the data on which they are trained. The Göppingen-based start-up MIRA Vision has developed a novel method for generating synthetic, photorealistic images, enabling the efficient creation of large, high-quality training datasets. An intuitive platform also allows researchers to evaluate microscopy images with ease.

  • Controllable microcatheters - 20/02/2025 Logo_EndoSurge.png

Robot-assisted control of surgical instruments using magnetic resonance imaging

Catheter-based examinations and surgical procedures are severely limited by the restricted controllability of conventional instruments and harmful radiation exposure to both patients and medical staff caused by prolonged exposure to radiation during fluoroscopy. EndoSurge, a Stuttgart-based start-up, has developed innovative robotic microcatheters that can be precisely controlled using the magnetic field of an MRI device.

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease - using an app to sustainably improve everyday life

Keeping appointments? Planning everyday life? For people living with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), sudden and unpredictable flare-ups can severely limit their ability to participate in daily life. The start-up coreway aims to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by IBD by leveraging data-driven insights and contributing to the advancement of personalised medicine.

Liquid Plug & Play: eco-designed plastic packaging – not just for ultrasound gel

In the healthcare industry tons of consumables such as ultrasound gel go to waste because packaging can’t be completely emptied. An invention called Liquid Plug & Play could offer a solution for the future. This innovation, which consists of a reusable outer shell and a disposable product pouch for viscous substances, can be completely emptied. It also prevents cross-contamination and offers many other benefits.

Magnetic Microrobot Swarms Enable Contactless Manipulation of Objects Through Fluidic Torque

In a study, a team of researchers show that groups of magnetic microrobots can generate fluidic forces strong enough to rotate objects in different directions without touching them. These microrobot swarms can turn gear systems, rotate objects much larger than the robots themselves, assemble structures on their own, and even pull in or push away many small objects. The work was now published in Science Advances.

Mitochondria influence lipid storage in cells

The powerhouse of the cells, known as mitochondria, appear to be able to influence the number of lipid droplets in the cell. Research into this previously unknown mechanism was conducted using baker’s yeast. This is shown by a recent study by the University of Freiburg, the University of Bonn and the University Hospital Bonn and the University of Freiburg. The results have now been published in the journal Nature Cell Biology.

Thermogenetics: How Proteins are controllable by heat

Protein activity can be precisely regulated via subtle changes in temperature using heat-sensitive switches. Underlying this capability is a novel modular design strategy developed by researchers at the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology of Heidelberg University. The strategy allows the integration of sensory domains in various proteins regardless of function or spatial structure.
