Baden-Württemberg is the number one health region in Germany

Projects in the health sector

The healthcare industry is an important economic factor and employment driver for Baden-Württemberg. And the Baden-Württemberg health region has the potential to serve as a model for sustainable development. BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg is working on many projects to ensure that this remains the case.

A total of 1,104 companies are involved in research, development and production in various subsectors of the Baden-Württemberg healthcare industry. In 2018, the companies with a total of 95,750 employees generated a taxable turnover of 25.22 billion euros. Typical of Baden-Württemberg in this regard are the medium-sized companies. Baden-Württemberg also benefits from close connections between industry and science and the cutting-edge research being carried out at universities, university hospitals and research institutions.

This potential is always uppermost in our minds when implementing projects such as the 'MDR & IVDR Fast-Track Support BW' programme funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics or overseeing the interministerial Forum Health Region BW, which is run by the Baden-Württemberg State Ministry. We are also particularly committed to start-ups and provide support in the form of initiatives such as the Start-up Compass (updated in April 2020) and the EXI Start-up Voucher for life sciences companies.

Pooling competencies

The Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and In Vitro Diagnostics Regulation (IVDR) pose major challenges for the companies and sectors concerned. As part of the Forum Health Region BW, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics, Labour and Tourism is providing funding to establish an MDR & IVDR Competence Centre.

Exploit opportunities, overcome challenges

The Economic Partnership Initiative by the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing Baden-Württemberg is intended to strengthen existing business relationships and to initiate new cooperations between BW and the UK. BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg supports this initiative in terms of healthcare industry-driven topics. We help companies from BW and the UK secure greater access to each other’s world-beating economic and research ecosystems.

Health Data Scenarios

Data generated by the healthcare system has enormous potential for improving the quality of patient-centered care. As part of the Health Data Scenarios project, Basel Area Business & Innovation worked with numerous experts from industry and academia in 2020 to develop ten scenarios of what future health data ecosystems could look like. These scenarios are now being discussed and validated together with experts and opinion leaders from Baden-Württemberg and Switzerland. BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg is providing support as a project partner.

Digitalisation of the healthcare system

The PC3 consortium will set up the innovative photon-counting computed tomography technology in Baden-Württemberg at the following sites: the Freiburg Medical Centre, Tübingen University Hospital and the Mannheim University Hospital. The consortium will be working with its partner, Siemens Healthineers.

The BIOPRO Health Team will be happy to answer any questions or suggestions you may have.
