28 exhibitors from the Baden-Württemberg biotechnology sector were present at the joint Baden-Württemberg booth at the recent BIOTECHNICA trade fair to present their products and services. The organizer, BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg GmbH, received positive feedback about the joint booth. “I am very pleased with the positive feedback we received from our co-exhibitors during the BIOTECHNICA,” said Dr. Ralf Kindervater, CEO of BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg, summarizing the positive atmosphere at the joint booth.
11,000 visitors were in Hanover from 11th to 13th October to visit the 618 exhibitors and find out about innovative developments and applications in the fields of medicine, nutrition, industrial production and environmentally friendly manufacturing technologies, laboratory technology, equipment and services as well as IT solutions for the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
70 of the 618 exhibitors were from Baden-Württemberg, and around 35 were present at the joint Baden-Württemberg booth, which has been organized by BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg since 2003. As in previous years, the Baden-Württemberg Lounge was once again the core element of the booth. The lounge served as a meeting place for visitors and exhibitors where they could share information and discuss their experiences or relax over a coffee. Around the lounge were 28 individual booths where exhibitors from Baden-Württemberg showcased their developments, products, services and networks in the field of biotechnology. For exhibitors, this way of presenting their business and activities is an important part of their dialogue with regular customers as well as a way of establishing contact with new customers. In 2011 for the first time, BIOPRO organized a competition to select three start-up companies from Baden-Württemberg to present their products and services at the joint Baden-Württemberg booth free of charge. The winners, biametrics GmbH and CeCo Labs from Tübingen and PEPperPRINT GmbH from Heidelberg, were thus able to present their activities at BIOTECHNICA. CeCo Labs, the newest of the three start-ups, was thrilled to be present at an exhibition for the first time. Biametrics and PEPperPRINT were equally positive about the trade fair overall, and in particular about the contacts they made and results of their participation.BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg GmbH also presented its services, providing information and publications about its activities as the state’s innovation agency in the field of biotechnology and life sciences. “BIOPRO is perceived as the key contact for Baden-Württemberg,” said Kindervater as the exhibition drew to a close.
This year’s BIOTECHNICA once again attracted a large number of exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. The majority of international exhibitors came from Switzerland, with France, Great Britain, the USA and the Netherlands close behind. Iran and Korea were also present with joint booths. The joint Baden-Württemberg booth welcomed delegations from Russia and Chile and offered scientists from Baden-Württemberg partner regions in China the opportunity to present their services at the booth. “The contacts that have been made at our booth clearly show that Baden-Württemberg is also of great interest for key international life sciences clusters and regions outside of Germany,” said Kindervater.
The majority of the Baden-Württemberg exhibitors reacted positively to the proposed reintroduction of two-year intervals between BIOTECHNICA fairs. Dr. Andrea Wetzel, Managing Director AW-Biotech-Marketing: “The majority of biotech companies are small- and medium-sized companies that find it difficult to set aside the personnel and finances required for annual participation in the trade fair. In addition, research and development takes time, which makes it difficult for small- and medium-sized companies to present innovative products and services every year.”
Dr. Kindervater called on the organizer of BIOTECHNICA, Deutsche Messe AG, to focus on innovative biotechnological fields of application in 2013, including the “emerging topics of industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and bioenergy, which BIOPRO already recognises as key fields of innovation.”
On the third and last day of the BIOTECHNICA trade fair, three of the 28 winners of the 2011 MTZ®-BIOPRO Student Prize were welcomed at the joint BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg booth: Manuela Mrakovcic from Biberach, Sarah Sagin from Blumberg and Hannah Walter from Heidelberg. The MTZ®-BIOPRO Student Prize is awarded to the best graduate in biotechnology at each biotechnology secondary school. The three students were impressed by BIOTECHNICA. They were given a guided tour around the joint Baden-Württemberg booth by BIOPRO, which they used to make contact with exhibitors and find out about exhibitors’ activities and career opportunities.
Three Spätzle shakers were up for grabs at the BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg booth. The shakers are perfect for making genuine Swabian egg noodles – “Spätzle“.
Spätzle shakers are also useful as containers for Tic Tacs - 1,861 of them to be precise! At this year’s BIOTECHNICA, BIOPRO challenged visitors to guess the number of Tic Tacs in a Spätzle shaker. Nobody managed to guess the exact number, but David W. from Meschede (1,853), Matthias T. from Schmallenberg (1,846) and Christine D. from Tübingen (1,884) all came very close. BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg hopes the winners have great fun with their Spätzle shakers!
